No this is not the obvious joke. Of course insurance companies are snakes. Everyone knows that! This is about a real life experience.
A while back I posted about the fucked up nature of the US healthcare system. This is a bit of a continuation of that theme. A bit of backstory…I take two prescription medications and am having a helluva time getting health insurance from the greedy and corrupt insurance companies. As it stands now I’m in limbo. I can’t get covered under an "underwritten" plan so I have to go with a HIPAA plan—a government mandated plan that forces the greedy and corrupt insurance companies to cover people they don’t want to. Of course it’s 5x more expensive than a regular plan and Blue Cross of California has had me in limbo for 5 weeks as they "process" the plan. (Funny how it only took them a week to process and deny me for the regular plan.) Did I mention that insurance companies are greedy and corrupt snakes?

LONDON (Reuters) - A Kurdish woman was brutally raped, stamped on and strangled by members of her family and their friends in an "honor killing" carried out at her London home because she had fallen in love with the wrong man. Banaz Mahmod, 20, was subjected to the 2-1/2 hour ordeal before she was garroted with a bootlace. Her body was stuffed into a suitcase and taken about 100 miles to Birmingham where it was buried in the back garden of a house. Full story

Does anyone deny that it’s all about power to these folks? Clinton and Edwards caught on tape discussing limiting the debates and wanting "a more serious and a smaller group" ie getting rid of those pesky other candidates who just screw up things for the biggies in the race.

I used to think that Dennis Kuchinich was a nut but the more I listen to him the more I think he may be the only decent one of the whole bunch of democratic candidates. Here’s an article about him calling Clinton and Edwards out for trying to limit democracy and squelch other voices.

I really hope that people don’t really believe that Clinton and Edwards are looking out for the little guys. Democrat, republican, tory, liberal, or baath party; it’s all about the power.

Just after I made my post on the end of oil I found this great post talking about the negative things that our dependence on oil has caused. Here are a couple of quotes:
The engine of modern prosperity runs on oil. That may have worked in the last century, but it’s a complete and total disaster in this one. And unless we get to a radical new solution right away, our children will be slaves. Oil plagues us in every way. It pollutes our air, over heats our atmosphere, funds terrorists, and gives sinister governments enormous power and sophisticated weapons.

For over 30 years our government and business leaders have led us down a dark slippery path where our way of life and our standard of living would become increasingly dependent on religious fanatics or ruthless despots. So what have we done?
We’ve darkened our children’s future. We’ve enriched scary countries like Saudi Arabia who support terrorism, Iran who wants to nuke Israel, and Venezuela who is becoming the new Cuba. Meanwhile, Europe has turned reborn ruthless nuclear Russia into an energy-fueled totalitarian powerhouse. And it’s only going to get worse. Why? World demand is exploding and too few people control the supply of “devil juice.”

For years some have said that the world is running out of oil. Many said that we’d be out within 50 years. Others said that there was enough oil to last for hundreds of years and that the folks who predicted the end of oil were alarmists.
In reality, the world won’t "run out of oil". There will still be plenty of it in the ground, it’s just that we won’t be able to get it easily or at all. Much of the remaining oil is held in shale rock or tar sands (not easy or cheap to extract), or is located in the deep ocean where there is currently no easy/cost-effective way to get it.
According to the peak oil theory the world’s oil production will be a bell curve–fast production growth, a small top, and then a rapid decline. Some say global oil production already peaked in 2004 and is now in decline. While the oil industry and many governments say that peak oil theory is nonsense and that there will be a long plateau of oil production but that it won’t happen until some 20-50 years in the future.

A Government Based on Facts and Logic, Not Delusions, Superstitions and Fables.
In a perfect world, all decisions would be made based on logic and facts. To a large extent, government is the writing down and enforcement of a group of decisions that some humans have made. The ideal would be that all of the laws, decisions, and judgments made would be based on facts and reality, and that all decisions made would provide the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
However, I didn’t just fall off the turnip truck yesterday. I realize we humans are much more complicated and fallible than that. We know that’s not the way the world really works. Decisions are made based on selfishness, greed, bias, money, fear, anger, sex, jealousy, etc. with the occasional bit of logic thrown in if it’s not too inconvenient. By extension, politicians, kings, diplomats, dictators, and presidents all make decisions, policies, and laws with these same human flaws and weaknesses. It’s all too obvious that much of the things that government does is based on personal wants, cash payments, promises of jobs, kickbacks, family relationships, sexual favors, etc.
