Why Actually Have A Life Of Your Own When It’s So Much Easier To Watch Other People Pretend To Have A Life For You?
That’s the beauty of television ladies and gentlemen. With television you don’t actually have to do anything. And isn’t that what we all really want anyway?
It is the birthright of every right-thinking American and citizen of the Western World to watch TV until their eyes fall out. (Or their brain fall out, whichever comes first.) In the tradition of rampant consumerism and more is never enough, we now give you the choice of hundreds of TV channels from which to choose…

I need a reality check here…
I’ve listened to Rage Against The Machine since they came out. I like their energy and their anger even though their leftist revolution schtick gets a little old to me. They’re great for 4 or 5 songs and then their formula starts to wear thin. Kind of a one trick pony I’d say, but they do their thing well.
I like the music more than I do the vocals. I’ve always found the singer Zack—or as I heard Kennedy call him once on MTV: "Mr-smarty-pants-I’m-so-cool-I-went-to-Harvard-revolutionary", has always kind of annoyed me. Part of it is his arrogance but mainly it’s his voice. I just find it too forced—like he’s a wuss trying to act like a bad-ass. Kind of like some smarty pants kid who went to Harvard trying to sound bad ass. Wait—deja vu. Oh never mind…

Let me preface this post by saying I am of the "Kill Your Television" opinion. In general, TV "makes you stupid and rots your brain" as my 5 year old nephew once said. He’s pretty much spot on. TV is one of the main reasons we’ve become overweight, passive, and under-thinking as a culture. It’s much easier to watch someone do something as opposed to actually doing it yourself.
Having said that, I’ve been faced with a dilemma this past week.

I saw this post about Jimmy Carter spouting more idiotic opinions. I had to chime in on the whole Israeli/Palestinian situation.
First off, Jimmy Carter is a boob and always has been IMHO. He is the epitome of all that is wrong with liberal ideology–Utopian, gullible, blind to reality, and naive beyond comprehension.
Secondly, to the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. I am fairly neutral on the subject. I see much fault with both sides.

No, it’s not 42. Not in this post anyway.
A couple of nights ago I went to a showing of the movie "The Secret." If you haven’t heard about it yet, it’s supposed to reveal a secret that’s been passed down through the ages. The secret of how to get anything that you want in your life.
The movie starts off with many quotes from famous people throughout history talking about the secret. Then there are several motivation speakers also talking about the secret. They go on about how is you use the secret’s power, you can get anything at all that you want. Several people give specific examples of how they’ve used the secret’s power to get their dream house, to find their soulmate, to make lots of money, etc.
So what is "The Secret"?

Yeah I know that’s no shocking news is it?
You hear about it on the news and every once in a while our politicians pay lip service to fixing the problem. But from where I stand it keeps getting worse and worse and it’s hitting closer to home.
Several months ago my friend’s company shut down so he and his family (wife and 4 kids) lost their insurance. Sure, in theory they could have bought COBRA insurance but that would have cost them more than $1000 a month. $1000 a month is a big chunk o’ change anyway, but when you’ve just been laid off it becomes that much more unfeasible.
Luckilly, they’ve been healthy and haven’t had any major sickness or accidents. But they and the other 46 million uninsured in America (as of April 2007) are just one accident away from bankruptcy. Healthcare costs are the top cause of bankruptcy in the United States. It’s sickening. (No pun intended.)

That’s a thought that I’ve had for a long time.
I’ve met several people who were on a campaign to save the world but were themselves a mess, or at least hypocritical. It’s easy to tell someone what else to do, but not so easy to make the changes yourself. Somehow people often forget that. They complain about all the things that are wrong with the world but never do anything positive or proactive to change what they don’t like.
Complaining about problems without offering solutions is pretty much just nagging. And it’s annoying.

What’s a good republican/christian conservative to do with this paradox? One one hand, of course he hates fags…but what if the fag likes guns? Damn. Guns or Gays? Gays or Guns? Does Not Compute! Does Not Compute!
I was at the library the other day and I ran across one of our local "alternative weekly magazines" and found myself staring down the barrel of a pistol held by a really manly-looking woman. At first I thought it was one of those body building women that just looks like a man. But then I looked closer and I said "By Jove I think that’s a man." OK I didn’t really say "By Jove" but I was intrigued. I had to know more.

More political and angry music. I just couldn’t resist laying out another does of Gil Scott-Heron. And again, just as with my post about "Whitey on the moon", the words written 30+ years ago are still poignant. And if you substitute a few cultural references here and there, it could have been written today. The more things change the more they stay the same. Lyrics here, audio/video below. Enjoy…

A friend of mine made this post about John Lydon AKA Johnny Rotten. He was pretty spot-on about the whole punk movement. Punk was a huge influence on the world and in my life too, in almost every way possible–musically, politically, fashion-wise, socially, etc.
I remember back in ‘76. I was 11 years old. The US was celebrating the bicentennial and patriotism was high and everything was painted red, white, and blue. It was the time of old hippie bands wearing their mother’s nightgowns and playing 15 minute guitar solos. Disco music was on the radio, there were bell bottom jeans, CB radios, truckers songs, custom vans, and lots of horribly ugly polyester leisure suits and lady’s pant suits. They weren’t at all ready for "She was a girl from Birmingham , she just had an abortion…"

This just in: Dateline May 17, 2007 - More scary crap about stuff melting. Satellite data collected by the scientists between July 1999 and July 2005 showed clear signs that melting had occurred in multiple distinct regions, including far inland and at high latitudes and elevations, where melt had been considered unlikely.
"Antarctica has shown little to no warming in the recent past, with the exception of the Antarctic Peninsula," said Konrad Steffen of the University of Colorado, Boulder. "But now large regions are showing the first signs of the impacts of warming as interpreted by this satellite analysis."

This story is apparently serious enough that even Fox News covered it. Now that’s saying something. This whole "global warming theory" might be something to keep an eye on.

I don’t care if you believe global warming is caused by humans, sun spots, or fruit bats; but you gotta admit that’s a pretty freakin scary headline. Quotes from the article:
"Global warming is accelerating three times more quickly than feared, a series of startling, authoritative studies has revealed. They have found that emissions of carbon dioxide have been rising at thrice the rate in the 1990s. The Arctic ice cap is melting three times as fast - and the seas are rising twice as rapidly - as had been predicted."
AND
"The significance is that this is much faster than even the highest scenario outlined in this year’s massive reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - and suggests that their dire forecasts of devastating harvests, dwindling water supplies, melting ice and loss of species are likely to be understating the threat facing the world."
AND
"On the ground, a study by the University of California’s National Snow and Ice Data Center shows that Arctic ice has declined by 7.8 per cent a decade over the past 50 years, compared with an average estimate by IPCC computer models of 2.5 per cent."
http://environment.independent.co.uk/climate_change/article2609305.ece Seriously, regardless of what you think is causing global warming, you gotta admit that this is some pretty serious stuff.

This strikes me as weird–or maybe sad or surreal–I don’t really know. It’s not that the founding member of the Black Panther Party shouldn’t barbeque, it’s just kind of unexpected that’s all. How you gonna fight the man when you’re hawkin’ a barbeque book? That ain’t no revolution, brutha!
